Ernest Hemingway
It’s very important to be your own person. Ernest Hemingway is an author who is known for being generally disliked amongst most teenagers. I like his writings. I had previously read For Whom the Bell Tolls by Hemingway and enjoyed its wartime setting and surprise ending. Before I read any of Hemingway’s short stories I had assumed that all his stories were in wartime settings. For most of his stories this is true, but I was surprised at how many weren’t during a war. I have chosen four of Hemingway’s short pieces to analyze. After reading and taking notes on common themes and literary elements for many Hemingway stories I have decided to use “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”, “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber”, “Soldier’s Home” and “In Another Country”. “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” is about a man Harry, and his wife, Helen. It takes place in Africa during a hunting trip. Harry has developed gangrene from what started as a small scratch in his leg. Harry is barely alive and welcoming death at the start of the story. He soon fears death as he realizes he wants to live. When death is brought to his camp for him in the form of a hyena, he succumbs to death and dies in the end.
is a good example of women being thought of as objects. Krebs repeats that he wants a girl to simply come to him and not complicate things by talking, “He liked the girls that were walking along the other side of the street…He would like to have one of them. But it was not worth it…It was exciting. But he would not go through all the talking. He did not want one badly enough. It was not worth it.” “In Another Country”, never explores the idea of women, all the characters are male. The only mention of females is towards the end in a conversation of marriage when we learn that the major’s wife had just died of pneumonia and now the major constantly denounces marriage. It is evident that Hemingway either thought very little of women or had very bad experiences with them in his own life. His writings freely allowed him to express his low opinion of women. In most of Ernest Hemingway’s stories, the theme of woman versus man repeats itself. Hemingway, through his writings, seemed to view women as objects of no value. “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” is the most evident of this theme. The entire story consists of dialogue between the husband and wife. The husband tells her that he has never loved her, which is the truth. He doesn’t want to hurt her so he takes back the cruel things he said, only to lie and say that he does love her. Their entire life together was just him using her for her loyalty. She actually loved him, and when he dies, she lays over him and dies figuratively. In “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” the same husband and wife relationship exists; “They had a sound basis of union. Margot was too beautiful for Macomber to divorce her and Macomber had too much money for Margot ever to leave him”(Margaret is referred to as Margot). In this version of the theme, the wife kills the husband in the end. “Soldier’s Home”! The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” also takes place in Africa on a Safari. The main characters are husband and wife also, Francis and Margaret. Francis has lost his pride and his wife’s affection because he was too cowardly to kill a charging Lion. Wilson, the safari guide and hunter, is left to kill the lion himself. Wilson’s occupation and courage are attractive to Margaret who then sleeps with him. Francis is aware that she has had many lovers before and this incident only tears the couple apart further. The story ends with Francis trying to redeem his pride by chasing down a buffalo. They think he has finally killed it when it suddenly charges them again and brushes Francis on the head. At the same time Margaret has fired her gun, seemingly at the buffalo, but really at her husband. This kills Francis instantly. Wilson knows Francis has really been killed by Margaret, but has it appear as an accident. The third story I will be analyzing, “Soldier’s Home” has only one main character, Krebs or Harold as his family knows him. He has just returned from a war front two or three years later than all the other soldiers. Krebs feel
