BSE

Does anyone know what the second leading cause of death in women is relating to cancer? If you do not, it is breast cancer. This year alone 190,000 women in the US will have invasive breast cancer. Out of that 40,000 women will die. This could be your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, best friend, or worst of all you. I am here today to explain to you about BSE. It is easy to do and very convenient. What is BSE? It stands for Breast Self Exam. Before I get into to BSE let me give you some facts and myths about breast cancer.

Do we know what causes breast cancer? No, we do not know the cause of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society lists some risk factors and myths about breast cancer. Simply being a woman is the main risk factor for developing breast cancer. Men can develop breast cancer, but it is 100 times more common in women, states MD Kirtly Jones (gynecologist). The risk of getting breast cancer increases, as you get older. Only 10% of women with breast cancer have been traced back to family gene history. Some myths about the disease are underarm antiperspirant chemical build up and interfering with lymph circulation, under wire bras causing breast cancer by obstructing lymph flow, breast implants, and night work.

None of these claims is supported by the scientific basis of carcinogenesis. There are other risk factor and myths about breast cancer, and if you would like to know more log onto www.cancer.org.

A new sensor pad is out on the market. The Food and Drug Administration have approved it for use as an aid to breast self-examination. The senor pas is made of two layers of plastic with small amount of liquid silicone inside. It is supposed to make it easier for you to detect lumps. It reduces the amount of friction between the fingers and the skin. The sensor pad is available without prescription at many pharmacies.

Now let us get into BSE. BSE is a simple procedure to help detect breast lumps. Women themselves first discover many breast cancer tumors. Women who do regular BSE are most likely to find tumors early, when they are small and in a curable stage. In addition, the most important part is the tumor has not had time to spread. Most doctors recommend regular BSE. BSE should not replace regular clinical breast exams by a health professional and it should not replace regular mammograms.

In summary, a BSE does not cause any discomfort, and there are no risks involved in doing a bse. You get to do it in the comfort of your own home. You yourself are performing the test. No one knows your bodies as well as you do. It does not cost you anything to perform this test. However, remember a bse doesn’t rule out breast cancer. Just think performing a simple breast self-exam could save your life.
