Many people have issues with the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Canada because Section 7 states that “Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.” This is some our rights as Canadians then why must our rights be in accordance with what the government believes it is right. Between 1992-1994 Canadians most important court case about physicians assisted suicide took place.

Joseph Sauder a 77 year old man was suffering from deadly side effects afterward a surgery. Joseph Sauder’s cause of death was from receiving a fatal dose of potassium chloride. Mr. Sauder’s kidneys, lungs, and liver had quit operating and he would live very much longer. Before Mr. Sauder’s death the family and doctor agreed on behalf of Mr. Sauder’s incurable coma that all life support should be shut down. Mr. Sauder was given two injections of Valium and Morphine by Dr. Mataya. It was to be thought that the patient would die within a hour. Dr. Mataya was then left to watch Mr. Sauder die by choking, in state of distress Dr. Mataya gave a dose of potassium chloride. Dr. Mataya received a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to administering a noxious substance.

On June 7, 1993 Mr. Raymond Skelly from Powell River, British Columbia declared in the House Of Commons, the idea of adjusting the Criminal Code to allow doctor-assisted suicide when it is requested by the patient, the patient is terminally ill and will encounter a painful death. Two independent physicians certify that the patients condition is terminal and the office of the Attorney General for the province will review the case.

Euthanasia is something not looked at kindly. Many people believe that it is against moral, ethics, beliefs, and religion. Yet they may not know that they may be causing more harm than good. With Euthanasia people may live until the pain become too much then a physician helps the terminally ill person commit suicide. Another good thing with Euthanasia is that you can have your family there and say all your goodbyes and resolve anything that needs to be resolved, and then you would drift off peacefully. That’s why many people believe that physician -assisted suicide should be legalized in Canada.

Robert Latimer was a hard working farmer that lived in Saskatchewan northwest of Saskatoon. Robert Latimer had a 12 year old Tracy who suffered from a severe form of cerebral palsy. Tracy was a forty pound quadriplegic who functioned at the level of a three month old. Tracy had been repeatedly operated on and at the time of her death she was due for some more surgery to remove a thigh bone. Tracy could not walk, talk or feed herself, though she responded to affection and sometimes smiled. Tracy was in constant, excruciating pain yet, for reasons unknown, could not be given anything
