False Memory Syndrome

Many argue that there is no such thing as False Memory Syndrome. It doesn't appear in the DSM IV. This is an untrue argument. Back in the day Multiple Personality Disorder did not appear in the DSM but it is there now. One day False Memory Syndrome will appear in the DSM. Meanwhile, people do develop "memories" of events they have never experienced and they do truly believe they have experienced these events. Call it false memories; call it delusions - it exists.

People forget most of what occurs to them, including some events that were pleasant or significant to them at the time. If an event is lost from memory, there is no scientific way to prove whether it was "repressed" or simply forgotten. One of the tops ways was to act out the past traumas then causing the patient to overcome and scrutinize his past fears. Also the emotional reactions will tell if the patient’s memories are fake if they rock or show childish fears.

Other way that it is easy to tell if they have false memories is if they suffer from multiply personality or dissociative identity disorder. There was a study done in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1999 looking into the ties with false memories and identity disorders. Patients with identity disorders have reported traumatic memories from the past in many cases. The theory goes that the person disconnects from conscious awareness at the time that an experience is going on and their disconnection causes another personality to form. This is where the problems set in. People suffering from traumatic memories of
