Family

Interdependence, Parenting, and Responsible Citizenship

Source: Journal of Gender Studies, Mar2001, Vol. 10 Issue 1, 11p.

One of the more interesting topics the article covers concerns the issue of the instillment of values among traditional families as compared to single parent homes. The author discusses the view of a specific liberal theorist who claims that the form of traditionalism that we need to sustain is the intact two-parent family. Porter disagrees with this claim and suggests that these conventional structures of traditionalism need to be ignored, but the morality behind the ideas should be maintained. These traditional methods and the responsibility that they endorse need to be embraced with contextual adjustments. It is in my opinion that the image of the single parent can never fully be put to justice without experiencing it first hand. I myself was fortunate enough to be raised in a single parent household to learn a set of values and appreciation for life that I would not have had it any other way.

fact that not many people take into account the multitude of effects that such a decision has on everybody who is in involved, mainly the children.
