Fashion
In my lifetime I have worn many different types of styles ad well as participated in a few new fashion trends. Three styles I participated in were “dress codes”, “vintage/preppy”, and “designer clothing.” Some of the reasons for changing the way you dress have to do with your environment, surroundings, and the people whom which you associate with. When I was in sixth grade, I transferred to a private school. Our dress code consisted of a blue polo shirt and khaki pants or a white polo shirt and blue pants. We wore this clothing because it was what was expected of us. I didn’t like the style and thought it was rather boring, but I did it because my parents made me. I tried to find ways to make this dress code a little bit more unique. I would wear a blue belt with my khaki pants and hope that maybe I would stand out in a school of three hundred or so kids. Wearing the same thing in school eliminated the competition. The school didn’t want the kids to compete over who was wearing the nicer alfit so they made it the same. At this point in my life I wasn’t yet an individual. I went with the flow and tried not to be completely different than all the other kids. I didn’t have the confidence and security
The third style that I participated in was “designer fashions”. In eighth grade, my parents decided to put me back in public school. I was now a student at Upper Dublin High School. The only problem was that I came into a school dressing completely different than everyone else, including my friends at school. I remember my first day in eighth grade and I wore a vintage button-down, with a pair of jeans with two holes on each knee and a small slit up the left and ride side of each bottom leg. Everyone looked at me like I was from another country. Even the people who I had grown up with thought I dressed very different. At this point in my life, I was coming to grips with a lot of things in my life. I was realizing that I was completely different than the people that I had been hanging out with. It wasn’t just the fact that I had realized that I was different than the average straight male. Fact: I was different. Fact: I was gay. I didn’t want to be the stereotype so I took it into my own hands to be as different as I possibly could without making myself an “outsider.” I started buying clothing that I knew I would stand out in. I wanted to wear clothing that most normal teenagers couldn’t have. So, I started spending ridiculous amounts of money on clothing. Fashion became something very important to me. Because most of the straight guys that I was going to school with would never even imagine getting spending $354 on a shirt, I did it. I would go to NYC and use my parent’s credit cards and buy whatever I believed looked good on me. It started becoming the normal for me. Till this day, I still spend ridiculous amounts on clothing. In my opinion designers are trying to reach people who want to be different. For example Garber states “ fashion has served a more complex function for lesbians and gays than it has for heterosexuals.” My parents believe that I do this because there is something missing from my life. I agree; I think! My second style can out when I started following in the footsteps of a close friend of mine. My best friend in private school was a kid by
