Fellowship of the Rings

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien is an excellent book. The characters are very well developed and the setting is unlike any other. This book is the first of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. In the beginning of the book we meet Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, Bilbo being the main character to the prequel, The Hobbit by Tolkien. It is Bilbo’s 111th birthday, and it his plan to secretly leave his home in “the Shire”. At a magnificent festival/party, Bilbo makes his disappearance, literally, with the help of his magical ring. This ring is the master ring, the “One” ring, and has the property of rendering its user invisible. Bilbo makes his exit back to his house, where the wizard, Gandolf the Grey meets him. Bilbo reluctantly gives up the ring (and his house in the Shire), and then leaves to his destination. Frodo soon comes back from the party, and inherits both the property and the ring. Gandolf explains a little about the ring to Frodo, and then leaves. Frodo lives the next nine years peacefully…

Over nine years later, Gandolf returns to Frodo, with unexpected news about the ring. Those who use this master ring become corrupted. The user not only turns invisible when he uses it, but he also fa

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, or J.R.R., was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontain, South Africa. He was living there at the time so that his father, Arthur, could work for the Bank of Africa (his family was originally from England). Early in life, both of Ronald’s parents passed away, Arthur dying (of rheumatic fever) in Africa in 1896, and his mother, Mabel, dying (of diabetes) in 1904 after the family had returned to England. Ronald had a younger brother named Hilary who came under the care of Father Francis Morgan, one of the family friends. Tolkien soon left to be schooled at King Edwards School, and then later, Oxford.

Frodo soon sets out with his loyal friend and servant Sam and his faithful companion Pippin. The group meets a black rider, who have learned of the ring, and of the name Baggins. The ring-wraiths are a fearsome bunch, and Frodo and his group do all the can to avoid them. Eventually the meet up with another hobbit friend, Merry, where another wraith is seen. They wander through a strange forest, and meet a strange character named Tom Bombadil there. From Tom’s house, where they stay shortly, they travel across the Barrow-Down plains, where the party is attacks by a creature called a Barrow-Wight. Soon the party of four reaches an in called the “Prancing Pony”, where they meet a fellow named “Strider”. Strider’s real name is Aragorn, and he is the son of a king over the sea. The hobbits agree to follow this strange man (to them) after verifying from a letter from Gandolf that Strider really is Aragorn. Before they leave however, the group has another encounter with the dark riders, who are hot on the group’s tail. The group continues on to try and reach Elrond, in which they are successful. Frodo however, suffers a wound from a knife of the wraiths. Once the group reaches the dwelling of Elrond, the fate of the ring is decided (it must be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom), and Elrond chooses a group of nine to take the ring to Mordor, where Mt. Doom and Sauron are. The group sets off and hasn’t much trouble until they decide that their journey takes them through a very old and dark place – a cavern where the dwarves used to live. The land is swarming with orcs and other beasts, and soon the group is found by a group of orcs sent by Sauron. A battle ensues, and while the group is fleeing (they are outnumbered) from the cavern, a creature called a “Balrog”, very dark and evil, takes Gandolf with it during a plunges off a bridge. The group supposes that Gandolf is dead, and loses hope. They continue however, until they reach the !

The companionship Frodo receives is also nice. He doesn’t have to face his quest alone, just as in our lives, we have Christian friends and the church to support us. Sam, Pippin, Merry and many others help Frodo through his difficult quest.

Tolkein continued to teach at Oxford, and soon wrote The Lord of the Rings, a trilogy that consisted of three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

land of Lórien. Here the Lady Galadriel aids and heals them as they rest. Soon the group, minus Gandolf, sets out again, and must travel down a river to reach their destination. The group soon notices that Gollum is following them. While on the river, the group gets attacked by orcs and other things sent by Sauron, but ends up unharmed. Eventually the party reaches a hill on which they stop and try to decide what to do. Frodo is under pressure, as the decision is widely his, and asks for an hour to think. During this, Boromir, one of the party tries to convince Frodo to give him the ring, so he can go save his town, Minas Tirith, which is under attack by Sauron. Boromir goes into a rage and tries to take the ring, during which Frodo vanishes (by the ring) and runs off. He is found, boating down the river, by Sam, who joins him, and from there the two set off, not sure who to trust anymor
