Hannah and Her Sisters

In 1986, Hannah and Her Sisters debuted and Woody Allen won an Academy Award for his screenplay. He not only wrote the screenplay, he directed and starred in the film. Michael Caine who played Elliott, Hannah’s husband and Diane Weist, who played Holly, Hannah’s sister both won Oscars for their supporting performances in this film. (Dorr 3) For my essay, I chose to describe a portion of the film and focus on the elements of form, how they work and how the director chose to manipulate the elements in this way. In preparation for this paper, I rented the movie from the library, watched it, returned it and thought a great deal about it. I then rented it again and watched a second time as some of the dialogue did not jive and I was convinced I missed something. After the second viewing, I was still left with the unanswered mystery from my first viewing. Did the answer lie on the cutting room floor or did I miss it after viewing the movie twice. Is it important? Was this intentional or an editing error? I hope to find the answer to these questions when I relate the scene I chose to the beginning and ending of the film.

The portion of the film I chose has five scenes and oddly enough, none of them include the actors th

The last scene of the flashback sequence takes place in Mickey and Hannah’s living room. They are about to serve dessert to their friends, Norman and Carol. From the conversation, it is clear they have known each other a long time as they are reminiscing about old times. Mickey is clearly uneasy as he is rubbing his forehead as if he has a headache. Hannah starts to bring up the subject of artificial insemination, but Mickey jumps in and takes over. He coughs then gets up and paces behind the sofa. The camera follows Mickey as he paces taking in only the characters that are in front of him. When he is behind Hannah, she indicates they have discussed and finally agreed to artificial insemination. Mickey puts his hands on his hips and says he’s not sure but then as he walks behind Norman and Carol, he asks for the sperm then leans against a table and rubs his hands along his thighs – giving the impression that his hands are sweating.

The memory evoked is showed with a flashback of three scenes. The first is a doctor’s office. The camera goes from the doctor to the couple as each speaks. As the doctor relays the information, Mickey immediate crosses his arms across his chest. It gives the impression that he is trying to protect himself from the next words. The doctor then gets up and as he speaks he walks around his desk and closes the office door and then returns to his desk. As the conversation continues, the camera angles change, going back and forth, focusing on the speaking characters, as if the camera is the non-speaking character. This is more effective than showing the three characters sitting around the desk having a conversation because it allows closer shots, different views of the characters and more emphasis on the conversation they are having. It is very effective and gives more depth to the scene than just having a fixed camera. Mickey’s tone becomes defensive and he challenges the doctor by suggesting there must be something that he can do and maybe he should get a second opinion. The doctor responds by saying it has been his experience that marriages become instable and destroyed by this information but then says he hopes they won’t make too much of it. He then goes on to suggest artificial ways and the scene ends. During this dialogue, the camera closes in on the doctor, emphasizing his words. Why bring up the possibility of marriage problems? After all, they are speaking with a fertility specialist not a marriage counselor. The viewer already knows that the marriage didn’t survive but by adding dialogue from the doctor, it gives the impression that it was inevitable and provides a reason to why the divorce occurred.

The second scene in the flashback sequence shows Mickey and Hannah walking down a city street, Hannah is crying softly, dabbing her eyes and blowing her nose. Mickey is very animated during the conversation waving him hands palms up in front of him as he emphasizes his word
