The Long Walk: Slavomir Rawicz

The Long Walk is a true story written by Slavomir Rawicz describing what pain and anguish he was put through as a prisoner. This story is a detailed account of Rawicz life. Rawicz was taken from his home for be accused by the Russians of being a spy. They thought this because he was in the military and lived near the border. He then spent a year in Lubyanka prison. He was treated terribly, he had to stand in a kishka, it was a small room with a dimmed light over twenty feet high, and Rawicz was only let out to be questioned by the Russians. Soon the men and Kristina found themselves in the Gobi Desert. This hard time consuming and boring trek through the desert, makes the men and Kristina test their wills to survive. The desert was hot during the day, and cold during the night. Kristina began to get sick, and couldn’t go on any further. She couldn’t walk because her feet and ankles swelled up and she died soon after. The had a sentimental miniature funeral where then men said their goodbyes. Then men had no other choice but to move on, on their journey.

While at camp 303 Rawicz was asked to repair a radio for the commandant of the camp. He volunteered his time to the commandant and he was rewarded with knowing about the war and cigarettes. He also met the only woman at the camp the commandant’s wife. She was the first woman Rawicz had seen since leaving his own wife and mother. They spoke to each other for a long while, they would talk about all their memories of home and how it is different from the camp. One day after fixing the radio the commandant’s wife asked an incredibly difficult question for Rawicz to answer. She asked him if he ever thought about trying to escape. Rawicz was extremely sensitive towards talking about the escaping subject with this woman. Rawicz ended up telling the commandant’s wife all his ideas about escaping from the camp. She recalls her ideas on how she would escape if she were a prisoner.
