Francis Bacon

On October 28, 1909 an abstract expressionist by the name of Francis Bacon was brought into the world in Georgian Dublin. Francis Bacon already having three older siblings, and one younger than him was considered the weakling of the family. As a young boy Francis suffered from severe asthma and was thought of as ugly by both his mother and father. He had lack of parental affection and therefore kept to himself most of the time. As he got older, Francis became aware of his homosexuality. Once his dad heard the news he disowned his son and kicked him out the house at the age of sixteen. At this time World War II was going on and Francis Bacon moved to Berlin with his uncle who seemed to be his lover at the time. Francis moving to Berlin is the beginning of history, for he went on to become one of the best painters in the twentieth century. He Painted master pieces that left people speechless, disgusted, and most important of all he showed the viewers reality. Why did Francis Bacon paint such evil, horrifying pictures that’s subjects were essentially religious? Why did he do what he did best, paint?

Many people look at Francis Bacon’s paintings and seem to be left with the question, why. Why did he paint paintings su

After having painted for fifteen years it was the Three Studies for Figures and the Base of a Crucifixion that brought Francis Bacon into the art scene. This is a very unique painting that can be looked at in many different ways. To start off you have three paintings, all with the same object but telling a different story in each. If you look at the first one which is located at left hand side, you see that this figure could easily be half-human and half-animal. It has the type of hair that would be found on a bird. When you get to shoulder level of the painting you see what might be mutilated wing stumps. Below that you can see an orangey sheet or something along those lines wrapped around this creature, keeping it still and trapped. Now the second picture located in the middle looks like a featherless ostrich. I say this because the length of the neck is very long. Now you also can notice that this creature has a mouth that is very human like. Right at the end of its neck this bird looking creature is heavily bandaged. Now the last figure which is on the right side shows what the object looks like without the bandage. You can easily see that this creature can open its mouth to about an angle of ninety degrees. It had some very big ears right next to its mouth, and a visible leg that resembled more of a table leg rather than one of a bird. Now the leg seems to be standing on a patch of grass or something along that nature. These descriptions here describe the Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion. But what is it that these paintings are trying to say.

The Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion is showing us reality. It is showing us how ugly we are towards each other and our selves. It is basically saying that we humans are animals. That is why this animal has a human mouth, ear, and leg. The three figures are showing us that it is ourselves destroying mankind. We all seem to blame things on other when things go wrong, but in reality we are all to blame. “Francis Bacon was trying to show the true demon inside human beings and that is that they are animals especially when it comes to war and he would not let us forget the atrocities.” (www.queer-arts.org/wwwboard2/bacon/messages/89.html) In April of 1982, at the age of eighty three Francis Bacon took a trip to Madrid against his doctor
