4. That wintry day would prove to be a perilous one for Currey. Currey was only 18 years old when he performed his actions of bravery. On 21 December 1944, just four days before Christmas, Currey, assigned to the 3d Platoon, was defending a strong point near Malmedy, Belgium, when the enemy launched a powerful attack. German tanks advanced in the direction of the 3d Platoon's position overrunning tank destroyers and antitank guns located near the strong point. After prolonged fighting, the group was forced to withdrawal to a nearby factory. Looking around, Currey found a bazooka in the factory. Realizing that the only rockets for the bazooka were across the heavily guarded street, Currey charged across the street enduring intense fire from enemy tanks and hostile infantrymen who had taken up a position at a house a short distance away, and secured the rockets. In the face of handgun, machinegun, and artillery fire, Currey, with a companion, knocked out a German tank with one shot. Moving to another position, he observed three Germans in the doorway of a house the enemy had taken. Taking aim, Currey killed or wounded all three with his automatic rifle. He emerged from cover and advanced alone to within 50 yards of the house, intent on wrecking it with rockets. He then proceeded to fire a rocket that brought down a large portion of a wall. He was in the thick of the action but was not alone. While in this forward position, he observed five Americans who had been pinned down for hours by fire from the house and three tanks.
