Gilgamesh and the Bible

As I look at my life much change has been bestowed upon me. Moving from city to city, school to school, I always had a parent, a friend, a companion. Companionship is an important factor in the mental well being of a person. This has been proven throughout time. Whether it is a mate, a wife, or a friend, it seems as though we all have someone. Even in the beginning of time when man was first created, a second, a woman was later produced as a partner. Two comparative pieces of literature have been passed down to tell the story of birth and creation. These two stories not only portray the beginning of life as we know it, but the beginning of something else, the beginning of companionship.

The two tales told are those from Gilgamesh and the first story of the Bible, Genesis. As they are read the reader is given a new understanding of life and love. The stories provide literature that shows the meaning of companionship and also how it prevails. In both stories a higher being created the companions for a man named Adam, from the Bible, and for Gilgamesh. The companionships although much alike had many different characteristics.

Another difference in the companionships of the two includes the presentation of each. Both Enkidu and Eve were made differently and presented differently to Gilgamesh and Adam. Enkidu was formed from the ground and dirt in the forest. He was discovered by a hunter, which later led to Gilgamesh’s urge to seek him. Eve was created from Adam to be his wife. She was formed with one of Adams ribs and delivered directly to him.

characteristics that distinguish the difference between the companionships of both Enkidu and Gilgamesh verses Adam and Eve is the reason each was created. In the story of Gilgamesh, he was known as “the strongest of all, the perfect, the terror” (Gilgamesh 4). He was also part man and part god, which gave him much power over his city, Uruk. Gilgamesh, being as powerful as he was, did whatever he pleased; this included sleeping with bride-to-be’s on their wedding nights. Scared of their protector, the old men cried out to the God’s and begged for them to create another. With that the God’s heard their wish and created Gilgamesh’s double, to allow one stormy heart to contend with another (5). By creating Gilgamesh’s co
