The Glass Ceiling

As we approach the millenium the workforce is flourishing. In this new age era people would like the think that the hiring, and promotional processes within the workplace are fair as well as inparcial; however, there does still exist road blocks for a few groups. The glass ceiling is a very subtle way in which businesses, and employers have been legally discriminating against certain individuals. Although invisible, many women, and minorities remain blocked from higher positions within their careers as a result of the glass ceiling.

Some, must first be a casualty of this form of discrimination before fully being able to understand it. A report called Good for Business: Making Full Use of the Nation's Human Capital concluded that, "a serious problem exist within business that prevents highly educated and qualified women, and people of color from reaching their potential in leadership positions with corporations. It is said that the glass ceiling is experienced in various ways for women and people of color depending on their gender, race, ethnicity an nation origin, and that it effectively


The glass ceiling is defined as a form of discrimination, because it keeps individuals from obtaining their aspirations, along with the fact that other individuals are behind it. The glass ceiling is an invisible obstacle by which women and minorities are kept from entering into the golden world of corporate recognition. The significant thing to understand about this form of discrimination is that it can rarely be proven to have actually taken place. Whenever someone has been held back due to the glass ceiling they find that there is always a documented explanation validating their non-promotion, although what’s on paper is not always as it appears. “For example, a man who sells insurance earns at an average $777 per week, compared to a women selling the same insurance for the same amount of hours who makes an average of $453. When a supervisory position becomes available, the man looks better qualified, more valuable on paper, simply because he earns higher wages. The women’s lower earnings contribute to the glass ceiling effect.” (Sand-Internet)

The victims in this ongoing cycle of discrimination are mainly women, and minorities. In the past when World War II was in process women had no choice, except to go out to work in order to support their children, and the lives they had created with the men that were fighting for our country. They not only went to work, but they were good at it; however when the war was over, and the men returned they also brought with them the demand of their jobs back. The world was ready to have things back to the way things were. Therefor, along came the campaign to get the women back in the kitchen. You began to see a host of June Cleavers, and Harriet Nelsons on television parading happily around their spotless homes. Dressed beautifully, with a wonderful dinner in the oven, or some fresh baked treats for the children, that never gave her a hard time, all, this while awaiting the arrival of their husbands to come home from a hard days work. This was a subtle way to induce the idea that women should be happy tending to their own business, which of course was cooking, and cleaning. On the other hand in the sixties there was a revolution going on. Medger Evers, Martin Luther King Jr., and Malcom X were all standing tall fighting for the rights of black people. The thing was to get black people the samre opportunities that all other people had one of, which was the right to work, and be something other than a maid or a shoeshine man. All of them in their own way insighting an equal opportunity movement. By the seventies every thing appeared to be okay, black people were working as well as a lot of women, due to the fact that many of them were raising children alone by this time. As the years have moved along more, and more people of color, and women have moved into the corporate work force. However the further they move into it, the more they are becoming aware that it is an altogether different struggle attempting to move up in the corporate wor!
