The Glass Menagerie
This play I would call tragic drama. All of the character problems were formed from deep psychological issues. I really enjoyed this play even though it was depressing, a couple of points gave me hope but then let me down again. That’s mostly what kept me interested. To me all the family wanted was happiness and the tragic part was they never got it. The first character in the play is Tom Wingfield, he seems to be in his late 20’s, and he works in a factory but aspires to be a poet/writer. He supports his “crippled” sister and mother because his father left them at a young age. He has a comic relief to his sad life, his dream is to get away and see the world but , he can’t do that because of the obligations that landed in his hands from his fathers leaving. He is very aggravated at his mother, due to her constant nagging, telling him what to do and when to do it but, what she doesn’t realize is that he is staying for her benefit not his. The next character in the play is the mother, Amanda Wingfield she is extremely overwhelming and pushy, as you know, to her son. She is also constantly protecting her daughter from reality at the same time without realizing she was treating her daught
The overall theme I got from this play is that Tennessee Williams gives us four characters whose lives consist more of avoiding their reality than facing it. Laura’s escape mechanism is illness when a situation threatens her. She also created a world in her glass menagerie, so she can stay clear of confrontation. Tom relies on self-denial to justify his feelings of insecurity. Amanda’s denial is ridiculous but, it’s still denial; she surrounds her reality with the memory of her days as a southern belle. She is unwilling to age and unwilling to be left by a husband but both have happened. The Jim O’Conner uses memories of Laura’s to gain some glory. Laura’s admiration fuels his ego then he leaves with no remorse. All in all this is a tale of sorrow yet I gained some relief in the awakening at the end. I gave this play 2 thumbs up, I believe the actors gave an excellent portrayal of a well-written play. I would definitely recommend this play to my friends because they all appreciate an intriguing story. I thought all of the acting was excellent. I felt they were all perfectly portrayed. Amanda Wingfield was my favorite because she made me want to get up out of my seat and yell at her because of the permanent veil over her eyes
