God is Watching

Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston, is a novel about self-discovery, in which Janie Crawford is determined to find true love in marriage, and live life according to her terms. Janie’s search begins in her Nanny's yard, as Janie lies beneath the pear tree when; "the inaudible voice of it all came to her. She saw a dust-bearing bee sink into the sanctum of a flower; the thought of the connection brought to her attention the wonder and closeness of a soul mate.

The moment Janie's grandmother realized that Janie's transition to a woman had taken place; she decided it was time to Janie to marry immediately. This would bring up severe ideological conflicts between Janie and her grandmother, which would prove to have long lasting effects on Janie's life. Janie’s Nanny went through a lot of troublesome times during her life. Once a slave, Nanny told a story of being raped by her master, an act from which Janie’s mother was brought into the world. With a crushing sense of personal sacrifice, Nanny tells sixteen-year-old Janie of hiding the light skinned baby from an angry, betrayed slave master’s wife. The Nanny believed that black women "were the mules of the world.

n the town store all of the time. He also became insanely jealous when any other man looked at his wife. Nanny's belief that "women are the mules of the world" comes back into play when Janie identifies with the yellow mule that becomes the subject of cruel teasing and punishment. Janie identifies with the mule because as a yellow "mulatto" she feels that she is a yellow mule herself wants to speak out on the mule's behalf. Joe continuously ignored Janie's brilliant oratorical skills and preferred Janie never speak at all. When the mule died, a "mock ceremony" was performed which copied all rituals performed at a human funeral, and in her sadness Janie was not even allowed to attend. After being slapped by Joe for preparing a bad meal, Janie's image of Joe is completely shattered and Janie finds herself ready share her hidden emotions with a new man. Despite this tragic breakdown in their relationship, Janie puts up with Joe in marriage for more than eleven long years, at which point Joe grows very old and is permanently placed in a sick bed. Janie finally learns to stand up to Joe at the end of his life and defend herself, finally breaking free of the subjugation of her marriage and gaining her freedom.

en above everyone else. Tea Cake wanted Janie to enjoy sports with everyone else, to play checkers like others, and to drink cokes in the store. These are all things Joe never would have wanted, because for him standing out was a way to achieve success and freedom. Tea Cake was the exact opposite, feeling that standing out only created a lack of freedom. While Joe relied on money, Tea Cake relied on nature, a vital connection with Janie, since she has relied on nature her entire life. Tea Cake's love for Janie's hair, combing and admiring it became a significant route to Janie's heart, being that Tea Cake is the first man who has ever liked her hair, her source of freedom and character. Janie eventually decides to live the life she has always wanted to live, and makes plans to marry Tea Cake, sell the store, and move out of town, all to the town's horror. Although no one is used to seeing Janie in this light, she strongly states that she never wanted to live "classed off" the way she did and this was the way she wanted to live. Living with Tea Cake Janie finally gets to see the world she wanted to see, with Tea Cake's wild gambling spree's and trips to strange new places like the Everglades. It is here in the Everglades that Janie would remain for the rest of her marriage with Tea Cake, agreeing to live off Tea Cake's money and plans, through thick and thin. This time represents happiness as well, because the reader can finally see Janie satisfied with her life after all of the years she waited for her happiness.

Janie married Logan Killicks to satisfy her grandmother, and had hopes that she
