Grapes of Wrath and Anthem

The Grapes of Wrath is a novel by John Steinbeck that exposes the desperate conditions under which the migratory farm families of America during the 1930's lived. It serves as an excellent example of the deterioration of social unity because one of its main topics of controversy is the class struggle between the rich and the poor. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck consistently focuses on the treatment of the migrant farmers. During many occasions, the Joad Family is put to the test, and it’s apparent that them, along with the other poor people, fail to come close in social power to any character that isn’t poor.

Through extensive analysis and comparison, the fact the time period people live in has an affect on a persons life has been clarified. The novel Anthem by Ayn Rand and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, have each demonstrated how the society of there times impacted and inflicted damage upon social unison in their own fictional realms.

Anthem’s representation of the theme is similar to The Grapes of Wrath. In Anthem, the characters also lived in a society filled with a degree of social cruelty and inhumanity. However, in the world of Anthem, it differed in the aspect that the mistreated labor class highly outnumbered their oppressors in population. It was a society where there were a select number of individuals that dominated over all because they were considered to be at a level of intellectual superiority and wisdom, far beyond that of anyone else. Early in the novel, Rand provides the reader with a description of a paradoxical world, lacking identity and individuality. As the plot thickens, it’s understood that the cause of all these restrictions and social barriers are those known as The Council of Scholars. This group is a class of people known for being superior and dominating in anyway possible over the typical enslaved working class. The Council of Scholars can be juxtaposed with the rich landowners in The Grapes of Wrath, in the way that they didn’t consider their inferiors to be any where close to a human equal.
