Hate Crimes
The worlds’ biggest enemy today is the word “hate” and the people who use the term. When speaking of the harsh word, “hate”, one speaks of how we hate different things others do such as what religion one practices, what race another is, the sexual preferences another likes, if one is disabled in any way, or just the way another looks. These things are why the world has very little peace with in it. These things are why the United States’ crime rate is so high. Hate causes people to do dumb and violent things. Crime in any way, shape, or form is violence to the point that people get hurt physically and/or mentally. Violence like this only causes others to retaliate and the next thing one knows it is an all out war. Hate crimes are a big problem in the world, but in the United States, it is to my opinion to be the worst. How bad is hate crime in America? Well, the answer stands in the FBI reports and other agencies across the country. In the United States alone, in 1994 there were 5,853 hate crimes that were documented (www.fbi.gov/ucr/hatecm.html). Just in Texas in the year of 1995, there were over 300 hate crimes that were reported to different agencies (www.adl.org/presrele/hatecr_51/2604_51.html). The total for the
Hate crimes date back to the beginning of time. In our history classes we learn about lynching, Kristalnacht, “ The night of broke glass”, and racists’ comments. We learn about how people then had to suffer and be afraid at all times and could not live the life they wanted to. A life of peace and happiness. We learned about the court cases like Brown verses the Board of education (Matsuda, Lawrence, Delgado, Crenshaw 9). We talked about the leaders from the past like Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, Malcolm X, M. Gandi, and many others. What they stood for and what they fought so hard for; to have the peace, to have the type of world where there was no violence and no hate. Where is that leadership now? Today one would think that that all the violence and the fighting for safety and to not be afraid was all over, it all being the past, but it is not. African-Americans are still being threatened by those who are racists and still live in fear for their lives from the Ku! Hate Crimes are something that hits home with me and to show my views on it and speak out about what is going on and how I feel along with the rest of the world is the greatest. Everyone should be concerned about what is going on in our society today, just because we can repeat what has already happened. Moving forward is the way we want to go, not back. A question is what is the government doing about this problem? The only protection we have in this society that we live in is the law. Is that enough, can a law keep peace and if so, how long? The answer is hard to find, but for now we have to go with what we have. There is the United States Constitution section 241: Conspiracy Against Rights of Citizens, which is just the right not to take someone else’s life (www.stopthehate.org/hate_crimes/fedlaws.html). Then there is the United States Constitution section 242, which pertains to the Deprivation of Rights Under Color of Law to the point that no one should be deprived by any reason race, color, or ethnicity (www.stopthehate.org/hate_crimes/fedlaws.html). Many states have there own hate crime laws, like Alabama and the majority of the southern states. Colorado and states like California also have hate crime laws to help protect those of different races, disabilities, and of sexual orientation. Any cr
