First, I want us to look at the significant problems in our country’s school systems. To begin with, why would we even consider sending children into places that even the adults that work there do not feel safe? According to a survey by the U.S. Department of Education 47% of teachers see physical conflicts and weapons possession as a serious problem in their school. In 1997 alone there were 424,150 crimes reported in public schools. This includes several thousand incidents of rape, robbery and physical attacks. Author Robert Maranto asks the question, “How can students possibly concentrate on le

arning when they have to worry about someone attacking them after class?” (72)

I have shown you just a few of the problems that are happening in our public schools. So, what is the solution? A rapidly growing number of parents are turning to home schooling. In the year 2000 there are between 1.3 and 1.7 million students being taught at home. (NHERI) There are many reasons that home schooling is the best alternative to public school.

I have shown you the problems with public schools. I have also shown you why home schooling is a practical and beneficial solution. In conclusion, I want to share a few names of people who have been home educated: Woodrow Wilson, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Quincy Adams and Thomas Edison. With home schoolers receiving National Merit Scholarships, attending Yale and Harvard, and becoming president, I think that home schoolings impressive record speaks for itself.
