Have you ever wondered what makes TV possible? How is it that dozens or hundreds of channels of full motion video arrive at your house? How does your TV decode the signals to produce a picture? How will digital signals change things?

Let me start with a quick fact about the brain. There are two things about your brain that makes TV possible. By understanding these two facts you gain a good bit of insight into why TVs are designed the way they are.

1. If you divide a still image into a collection of small colored dots, your brain will reassemble the dots into a meaningful image.

To begin with, think of your TV as a radio, because Radio and television work in similar ways.When you turn on the radio and select a station, it’s very similar to when you choose a TV channel. Radio waves are sent through the air from large towers. Your radio has an antenna that picks up radio signals, and the speakers amplify the waves into sound. When you change the radio station, you change frequencies. In other words you are selecting which radio signals you want to hear.

The beams that flash the picture on the screen are not lights, but scanning electron beams. Electron beams move very quickly and are very powerful. There are three beams in a color TV set, one beam for each color. The beams shine on the phosphors and, almost instantly, a picture appears.
