Three and a half million (fifteen percent) of the American people lived in cities, and the percentage of city dwellers increased to forty percent by 1900 (King and Napp 346). A city block usually held 5,000 tenements. Dumbell tenements were six to seven story buildings that had no toilets, and there would be as many as eight families. They were very dark and had an air shaft to let light and air in. The cities were so dirty that grease, sewage, and dead animals floated in Chicago rivers.

But jobs were not the only thing that people came to America for. There were theatres, dances, music halls, and roller skating rinks that also attracted people to come to America. Poor people learned the music and the arts of their home countries and other countries that other immigrants showed their traditions. It wasn’t until then that the poor immigrants started getting more freedom for themselves.

In 1893, a crew of 7,000 workers worked together to build the Exposition. People traveled around by foot until they invented the electric motor. After inventing the electric motor, they invented the trolley. The trolley was a public transportation in the city. By then, they had started building railroads.

It used to be that people actually had to go into a store and tell the clerks what they wanted to buy. Now, people can walk into a store and pick out what they want. Products can be touched and there are different brands to choose from. Not only that, but people are not limited on what you can and cannot buy. Back in the 1850’s, poor immigrants couldn’t buy certain things because there were only sold to the more financially stable people, who were usually the Americans. Americans pretty much got first choice at everything.
