During the award giving ceremony, Maria’s inability to understand her situation in the U.S.A. increased. As the award giving ceremony was being held Maria was quite confused. She tried to smile every time the cameras flashed her, but she was completely puzzled by the noises and the lights. While the New York Mayor was delivering her speech, Maria tried to listen to him but it was difficult for her to grasp the Mayor’s message. After the Mayor’s words, Maria started to tell one of her stories from Guatemala. But suddenly the Mayor interrupted her and put his arms around Maria’s shoulders and squeezed her very hard. At that moment Maria was completely blushed and disoriented. Then she started again with her story, but now the audience started to laugh and burst into wild applause before she could finish.
