English as a Second Language
We know that immigration implies the movement of people into another nation with the intention of residing there permanently. Along with this definition we should take into account that immigrants have high expectation for the new way of life they would lead. They would attempt to get a better job, a better lifestyle, and also they would try to get academic education. However, in their new way of life they would be exposed to unexpected situations that would make them feel unable and confused so as to understand their position as immigrants. These circumstances are clearly visible in the story “English as a Second Language” by Lucy Hoing. Throughout the short story Maria seems to go through different stages that lead her from her initial inability to understand her situation in the U.S., to her final awareness of where most of her difficulties would lie as an immigrant. During the award giving ceremony, Maria’s inability to understand her situation in the U.S.A. increased. As the award giving ceremony was being held Maria was quite confused. She tried to smile every time the cameras flashed her, but she was completely puzzled by the noises and the lights. While the New York Mayor was delivering her speech, Maria tried to listen to him but it was difficult for her to grasp the Mayor’s message. After the Mayor’s words, Maria started to tell one of her stories from Guatemala. But suddenly the Mayor interrupted her and put his arms around Maria’s shoulders and squeezed her very hard. At that moment Maria was completely blushed and disoriented. Then she started again with her story, but now the audience started to laugh and burst into wild applause before she could finish. At that moment Maria felt totally embarrassed since she realised she made a grammar mistake while she was delivering her speech.
