Jesse Ventura -- Body And Mind

He's big, he's loud, he's hard to ignore. On November 3rd, 1998, pro-wrestling star Jesse Ventura was elected governor of Minnesota State. Some other entertainers have successfully gone into politics such as former Mayor Clint Eastwood, Senator Fred Thompson, Congressman Sonny Bono, and President Ronald Reagan. These victories were no surprise mostly because they were all either Democrat or Republican and already in the public eye. Jesse Ventura was voted in on the Reform Party ticket. He was not a beloved actor or recording artist, he was a foul-mouthed former pro-wrestler. Though political commentators took the man nicknamed "Jesse The Body" to be a joke, Ventura's voice was heard by the voters. His enemies hate to admit it, but Ventura's fresh political attitude has been very beneficial for his state. Jesse Ventura's independent political stance has won him support and been a catalyst for positive change for Minnesota.

Ventura appeals to voters because people feel he is 'one of us'. In his own words, "I stand for the common man because I am him" (Ventura, 3). He was not born famous with the catchy name "Jesse Ventura". He was born James George Janos," the second of two children in a hard working middle-class family.

After graduating high school as a C student, Jim followed his older brother's footsteps and joined the Navy. Of the 300 soldiers aspiring to become a SEAL, Janos was one of four who passed the rigorous screening. He received an honorable discharge in 1973. He stayed in California for a while and was briefly a member of a motorcycle gang before returning to his home state Minnesota. In 1975 Jim Janos began an eleven-year career traveling the US as a pro-wrestler named 'Jesse "The Body" Ventura'. He was immensely popular until blood clots in his lungs prevented him from ever wrestling again. Ventura once again returned to Minnesota without a career or college education. All he had was his popularity and his outspoken mind. In 35 years of his life, Ventura had had many of the same illicit experiences as other young men. He has admitted to (legally) courting a prostitute in Nevada and occasionally using marijuana. He feels both these activities should not be punishable crimes. Ventura has been married since his early twenties to a loving and supportive woman with whom he has two children. He's an average guy. In 1990 Ventura ran for mayor to protect the wetlands near his home. He succeeded in uprooting 18-year mayor Jim Krautkremer. His term lasted four years after which he did not seek re-election. Ventura is the average man who has worked hard for all of his successes. He has fresh views, which contrast dramatically with both the Democrats and Republicans. He is pro-human: pro-choice, pro-guns, and pro-gay rights. Ventura's blue-collar roots and anti-traditional views are what appeal to his supporters.

were being fairly represented. They owned land but did not live on it, which meant they unable to vote on preserving their nearby greenery. Ventura allowed them to vote for any propositions pertaining to their property on the ballot for their home district. Until these persons have ample representation, Ventura has also halted all extra taxes to their property. Since no special interests are supporting Ventura, he has the ability to take necessary actions that other politicians are afraid of. Ventura wants to bring the state of Minnesota to a unicameral legislation.
