Juvenille Delinquency
How do you combat juvenile delinquency when psychologists believe “much of the delinquency grows out of the adolescents need to rebel against the restrictions of the adult world?” You can’t dispose of adults. So why not eliminate adult restrictions? Yet, restrictions are imposed to offer to offer the framework for societal order. Without adult restrictions, all teenagers would be free to be delinquents. Yet, psychologists say the cause of delinquency stems from adult restrictions. Is this a double-edged sword? Or could you redirect or eliminate the adolescent need for rebellion? If so, you could curb delinquency. Most juvenile offenders go on to become chronic offenders. Male juvenile delinquents are more likely to commit violent or serious crimes like rape, murder and armed robbery (Pancratz, p.7). Obviously, this has a damaging effect on society. Whereas females tend to commit less serious crimes like shop lifting, teenage males are the lifelines for drug trafficking. Consequences for juvenile delinquency are imprisonment or rehabilitation. If you are 17 years old, you are tried as an adult and end up in prison. If you are tried as a juvenile, you do not go to prison but a detention center such as Ethan Allen or Whales. It has been proven that if juveniles are dealt with harshly or with extreme measures they are more likely to repeat crimes (Green and Stanford, p.162). This is where rehab takes place with intensive counseling and psychotherapy. The juveniles are gradually worked back in to society through incentives and job opportunities. In addition, there is electronic monitoring, along with house arrest. In conclusion, it seems the only true way to limit juvenile delinquency is by nurturing and enriching the intricacies of family life, anticipating and treating the situations before they become problems. Through increased family participation and these newly formed preventative programs, we as society have drastically been able to reduce the amount of juvenile crime.
