Knowledge Gained Through The Magic Mirrors Of Steppenwolf
Knowledge Gained Through the Magic Mirrors of SteppenwolfThe Steppenwolf contains hundreds of mirrors, starting with the wet asphalt, when Harry is first introduced to the Treatise, and ending with the reflected murder and execution. The entire world that Harry travels through can be seen as the reflection of his own mind. These events are not meant to be taken literally, but are all part of a process by which to attain the knowledge from the Magic Theater Harry must first become totally removed from the "everyman". Ultimately Harry understands, through the mirrors of the Magic Theater, that he alone has total control over the "hundred thousand of pieces of life's game". Throughout the travels in the novel, especially the travels through the Magic Theater, Harry gains understanding and therefore control of his life. Throughout the novel Harry encounters many mirrors that provide him with mew views on life. The first mirror that Harry sees is the reflection of a neon sign on the wet asphalt of a street as he walks through the town late at night. This is his first sign of any sort from the Magic Theater. The last mirror of the story was when Harry saw Pablo and Hermine lying naked after making love. "With no emotions Har
Pablo already knows the complexity of Harry's mind and he tries to open up Harry's mind by teaching him about himself through the Magic Theater. Bu introducing Harry to the Magic Theater, Pablo is able to help Harry to come to terms with his emotional problems and uncertainties. Pablo therefore becomes "the master over Harry's soul." Pablo can reveal to Harry all of the things that he can not figure out about himself. Harry cannot think in terms of the Magic Theater, so first Pablo must teach Harry how to understand how he must think to enter the Theater. The whole of what Harry learns in his journey through the Magic Theater is what gives him the understanding that he needs to gain control of "life's game". One of the ovearall ideas that Harry learns from the Magic Theater is that he must learn to laugh. "Humor is an underlying theme throughout the Magic Theater." Another overall theme that Harry learns about is sensual pleasure. Sensual pleasure leads Harry to a fuller life, one that he has never experienced prior to his entrance into the Magic Theater. Maria's role in teaching Harry was that of a one on one, man and woman, sensual pleasure seminar. Pablo's role in teaching Harry was that of a teacher who helps a student explore new boundaries, in this case Harry found out about drugs, alchohol, womanizing and homosexuality. Hermine teaches Harry about his pleasure life by involving him in the dance clubs and the huge ball that he goes to. She enravels him into the life of the burgoise and the party, dance ! s a slight inclination of homosexual love. Pablo finds out that Hermine and Maria are also lovers on the side. Through these experiences Harry learns that he does not know all that he should about himself. He also learns that exploration in his life, in all aspects, will lead him to a more happy life. ry stabbed the reflection of Hermine with the reflection of a knife.
