His life started on February 20, 1967, as the first son to Donald and Wendy Cobain. His birthplace was Hoquaim, Washington, but when Kurt was six years old, his family moved to nearby Aberdeen, a small logging community that had been in decline since the mid-nineteenth century. During his childhood, he displayed a flair for artistic activities and was an outgoing, intelligent boy. His parents divorce in 1975 however, changed all that. It was an ordinary divorce, but it effected Kurt greatly. His whole personality changed. He became difficult to cop with and shy. As his life progressed, he sought refuge from his shattered family life by deviling into music and visual arts. His teachers regarded him with nothing but praise and commendation. Also at this time, Kurt had been growing enchanted with rock music as a forum for expressing the anger that was welling inside of him that he disparately needed to rid himself of. Kurt was frequently labeled homosexual in high school because of his disgust with the macho, chauvinistic attitudes of his peers and his hometown. He was a scapegoat, but not in the sense that people picked on him, but that he was so crazy and insane by then that people constantly left him alone. He was anti-social and with drawn from everyone.

The following year, they released yet another single without much success. By now, Nirvana thought they had an unfair welcome in the industry, and decided to change record labels from Sub-Pop, to Geffen. So, in 1991, they signed a contract with Geffen and started to produce their next album which was to be named Nevermind. On September 24th, 1991, the same year Nevermind came out and debuted as number forty-four on the hit-lists, an interview on MTV’s Head Banger’s Ball, and an appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, the album skyrocketed to the top with their hit song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

By that time, Kurt could not take it anymore. He dropped out of high school with only a few weeks left until graduation, which resulted in expulsion from his mother’s house. He bounced from home to home, crashing on the couches of friends, and even sleeping under an Aberdeen bridge. It was during this time that Kurt met bass player and fellow outcast Chris Novoselic. Together, they formed a succession of bands, and names such as Skid Row and Fecal Matter until settling on Nirvana in 1986. In the process of finding a name, they also underwent a search for a drummer, which was a long and tedious process, but they found Dave Grohl to be sufficient in 1987.

Kurt had never expected to be so popular and did not like the idea of being a main stream rocker. He hated the commercial part of Nirvana, and several times encouraged the audience to stop buying their records and to stop coming to their shows and concerts. Kurt believed that most of the fans were false and only liked their his single, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
