The white smog of tear gas was spreading around the main gate of our university. Hyun-jung, my girlfriend, was banded in solidarity with other demonstrating students and was shouting slogans with the students against the policemen. ¡°Abolish the National Security Law!¡± ¡°American Forces go home!¡± The demonstrating group was planning to walk downtown from the main gate of the university, shouting their slogans. There was some conflict at the front of the formation with policemen carrying shields and batons. When the conflict was getting serious, all of a sudden, another group of policemen, who were brandishing their batons and shouting ¡°Charge!,¡± attacked the group. The falling batons made the students moan and scream. The person who carried the megaphone and spoke through it was the first victim and the target of vicious kicks. The policemen, looking like messengers from hell, were acting outrageously, violent, and crazy. Hyun-jung ran onto the university campus after dispersing the other students. A senior, who had been running with Hyun-jung, fell down at the sudden blows of police batons on his head. Let¡¯s go,¡± said the quarterback. Players clapped together one time and went to their positions. The center put up the ball and the quarterback shouted, ¡°Ready, Set!¡± The quarterback looked around the motion of defensive secondary and the wide receiver ran to the right side from the left. ¡°Down!¡± I observed the defense end like a predatory animal. ¡°Hut, Hut!¡± When the center snapped the ball, the linemen¡¯s blocking blasted at the same time. The fullback glimpsed me running to the right side. The quarterback turned his body and threw the ball at my chest. I grasped the ball (it was quite slippery) and put in my right armpit. The fu
