Tomorrow's World
Beautiful trees, colorful birds, fragrant flowers, sparkling springs, and clear blue skies. These are just some of the few items the planet has given us. We live on such a wonderful place that offers beauty and pleasure. This planet deserves to be treated with the highest of respects. Sadly, we have a problem of destroying the planet by polluting and depleting our natural resources. To have a clean planet and abundant resources for our future generations we must teach and emphasize the importance of sustainability. The terminology for sustainability is meeting the needs of the present generations with out compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. A simple example of sustainability is the rapidly growing of subdivisions. The natural resource used most in the production of homes is lumber. Naturally, lumber comes from trees. Sustainability in this case would be planting trees to replace the ones that are cut down for the supply of lumber. Lester R. Brown writes an essay on his attitude towards environmental issues. He states, “time to get the world on a sustainable path is rapidly running out. We believe that humanity will achieve sustainability, it will d
Other problems related to the landfills are that they are not 100% leak proof. Some older landfills do not have the liners. Studies show that even the landfills that do have liners eventually leak. It is just a slower process. Even with the most durable plastic, landfills still leak in our ground and into groundwater. Household chemicals, pesticides, and paint thinners are some of the ingredients that will cause these liners to weaken. The mixing of wastes will produce unpredictable results. Therefore, we still do not known what kind of long-term damage we will do to our environment. Think about when you go and eat at a popular fast food place to grab a burger. Think about all the packaging that took place to give you that one burger. The packaging of the meat to the restaurant, the packaging of the bread, and the packaging of the condiments that is put on your burger. Let’s not forget the packaging that they put on the burger before it is handed to you that may be used for 30 seconds. Then go back and think how many burgers are served worldwide. Going grocery shopping is another big consideration when it comes to possible recycling. Everything we buy is packaged. Imagining that we are going to have spaghetti for dinner. The meat you buy is in a Styrofoam container, which is not biodegradable with saran wrap. The sauce is in a glass jar. The noodles are in a cardboard box. Even the lettuce is packaged in some form of plastic. After you have checked out the register your groceries have been put in several plastic bags. Even when we buy a gift we use some form of packaging. Think about a gift you want to purchase for a child. There are two dolls on the shelf. One is packaged in a colorful box with see through plastic and the other doll is not packaged she is just sitting on the shelf. Which one would you buy? If you are honest you would have picked the doll that is packaged. This is a behavioral practice that needs to be changed. Manufacturers must find ways to sell their product for what is worth and not the packaging it is in. Not only will they save the depleting of resources and eliminate the filling of our landfills but in the long run the consumer has also saved money. Consumers will not be paying for packaging but for product. Lester R. Brown predicts the following:
