Efforts to make marijuana illegal began in the early 1900s. In 1930, the lack of scientific knowledge concerning marijuana led the National Bureau of Narcotics to start a fight to make marijuana illegal. Following this, the FBI released statements, which accused marijuana of causing insanity and cave man like tendencies. With lack of information, scientists and officials could not diminish these false rumors. Therefore, many believed that where there was crime, the cause was marijuana (www.western.edu…).

Ironically, it was the U.S. Army who first published supportive and factual information about marijuana in 1933, which concluded that the drug was harmless and did not cause maladjustment in the user. Despite the Army’s findings, in 1937 the Marijuana Tax Act was passed which made the drug legal only to those who paid a tax for its medical use or industrial use (www.western.edu…). Finally by 1960, marijuana was illegal in every state and mandatory penalties had been established (Carson-DeWitt 89).

In conclusion, marijuana is a rather harmless drug compared to the legal drugs that aren’t controlled by the law. Marijuana does not cause serious addiction like alcohol and nicotine which are legal drugs. This so-called harmful drug actually grants the user the right to quit at any time without problems of withdrawal unlike alcohol and
