Lifge Stories Of Undistinguished Americans As Told By Themselves

For those coming in to the United States, there was a belief that their migration would lead to a better life. Many immigrants believed that America was a land of opportunity, and that the streets would be paved with gold, yet, when they actually arrived in the country, things were much different then they had expected. Upon their arrival in to the United States, immigrants faced many hardships. Lack of jobs, lack of money, and a lack of knowledge of the English language all proved to be barriers that those immigrating in to the United States had to face. In the book, The Life Stories of Undistinguished Americans as Told by Themselves, many of those issues were addressed. The common link that bonded all of the life stories together was the eagerness of the immigrants to come to the United States. For all of those profiled in The Life Stories… it seemed as if they all had great hope for the future. No matter how bad things got, it seemed as if there was always hope for a better tomorrow, a hope that kept them struggling to make a good life for themselves. This faith in America unites each and every one of the people whose stories are told in The Life Stories… For the Lithuanian, the Italian, and the Grecian, the faith

before the union came was getting through the year with an average of $9 a week. I am getting $11. In my first job I got $5 a week.

Yet, the man managed to stay optimistic. He soon moved to Chicago and got a job working for a man who would not teach him English. Eager to learn English anyway, he got a Greek-English dictionary, taught himself the language, and received a better job. If it wasn’t for his perseverance, he would be stuck in the same job, not bettering his situation at all. Even after severely burning himself and losing everything he had worked for, the Grecian kept faith and persevered. He eventually worked hard enough to open a chain of fruit stores and grocery stores, with his net worth increasing to $50,000. Through his hard work, perseverance, and faith that things would get better, he managed to make himself a hefty chunk of money and better his quality of living a great deal. If he hadn’t of had so much faith in the notion that things indeed would get better, he probably would of given up long before.

The man who told his life story through “The Life Story of a Greek Peddler,” also overcame the hardships that faced him and used his faith and perseverance to achieve success. The Grecian works as a push-cart man, and quickly finds out that if you aren’t bribing the police, you are not allowed to sell your goods in prime locations. The Grecian points out one of his encounters with the police in the following exert:

I am now nineteen years of age and have $700 saved…. We shall open some more parlors soon. I know an Italian who was a bootblack ten years ago and now bosses bootblacks all over the city, who has so much money that if he turned it all into gold in would weigh more than himself.

It [joining the union] has raised my wages. The man who worked at my job

All three of these immigrants had one thing in common-their faith that things would indeed get better. And through their faith and perseverance things indeed did get better for all of them. If any one of these m
