Louis Armstrong

Louis Daniel (Satchmo) Armstrong was one of the greatest trumpet players ever known to man. Other than his trumpet, Louis had a great voice for the music he played which was called jazz music. Still today he is known for his music and being one of the pioneer’s of jazz and big band.

Louis was born in the Storyville District of New Orleans, Louisiana, on August 4, 1901. He always celebrated his birthday on July 4, 1900 because his family told him that. It wasn’t until he died on July 6, 1971 that people found out his real birth date. His father Willie, a laborer left the family soon after Louis was born. His mother Mayane, was a domestic servant and a part time prostitute. She left Louis and his sister Beatrice, also called ‘Mama Lucy’, in the care of his grandma much of the time. Even though his family split apart, Satchmo still believed it was his family that helped him through the “rough times.”

Louie grew up in a neighborhood called the Battlefield because the toughest people in town used to live there. They would shoot and fight all of the time between two blocks called Gravier and Perido. It wasn’t a very good neighborhood to grow up in he said. He dr

Satchmo has helped generations of music so much by just doing what he knows how to do. He is a big influence on many musicians and people that aren’t musicians. His music can give a kid hope to be a great trumpet player like him, it can give someone something to relax to, and it can even help someone read a book. Louis Armstrong has done so much for this country and even though he is dead he can still help people out by being an idol. The music of Jazz survived many years and he is one of the reasons.

After being released from the Waif’s home at age fourteen, Louis worked selling papers, unloading boats, and selling coal from a horse cart. On his free time he would listen bands at clubs like the Come Clean Dance Hall, Funky Butt Hall, and Mahogany Hall, in Storyville. Louie’s favorite band was the Kid Ory Band because Joe “King” Oliver was his mentor. By 1917 Louis was playing in different groups at dive bars in New Orleans’ Storyville section. In 1919 he joined Fate Marable’s band in St. Louis, and stayed with him until 1921. His band played on the Missis
