Mainstream Autonomy

In Jib Fowles essay, "Advertising's Fifteen Basic Appeals", he writes about how advertisers attempt to sell products by sending messages through either visual or written messages. In a successful advertisement, while trying to sell the product the advertiser also paints a whole scenario in the back of the reader's mind. This is a method of psychological manipulation used to link the product to the appeal the advertiser wishes it to be associated with. In a recent advertisement, promoting the Anchor Blue clothing line, the advertiser targets young adults by using two of these appeals. The first can be seen in the text bearing the message, "It's A Free County. Dress Accordingly." an obvious appeal to one’s sense of uniqueness. The second is presented in numerous pictures which suggest that if you wear Anchor Blue you will gain attention from your peers. In this advertisement the Anchor Blue products are given meaning in terms of their appeal to autonomy, attention and their use !

Jib Fowles explains autonomy as, "The need to endorse the self (page 439)." To be original, or one of a kind, is something very precious to many young adults

This advertisement was designed to appeal to young adults who want the look that the models in the photographs have. The look being: atheletic, healthy, fun-loving, independent, unique, and casual in a well-dressed mannor. The advertisment is ment to make you think that these clothes will bring you these attributes, and then in turn these attributes will bring you attention and autonomy. It's not neccesarily so, but it could happen and that's what motivates us to buy.

The photographs in this advertisement appeal to the younger generation’s need for attention. Human need for attention is explored in Jib Fowles statement, "The desire to exhibit ourselves in such a way as to make others look at us is a primitive, insuppressible instinct. The clothing and cosmetic industries exist just to serve this need, and this is the way they pitch their wares (page 438)." The attention this advertisement is offering however is not of a bad nature but rather one of beauty and well liking. The people in the images all have stand out qualities which are to be associated on a sub-logical level with the Anchor Blue Brand. All the models are buetiful, something that most people would
