At this phase in Malcolm’s life he did really well in school; he was voted class president, even though he was the only black child in his class. At the end of this phase of his life, Malcolm was finishing the eighth grade. I believe that this well-behaved, academic phase ended because of a teacher. His teacher asked him what he wanted to do when he grew up and Malcolm stated that he wanted to be a lawyer. The teacher immediately told him he should think more real

Malcolm X gave many unique contributions to our society. He made many black and white people unite, in his later days, to try to make things better for all oppressed people in our society. Malcolm had many personal and public issues in his life. When he was a child he could see that many black people tried to look white by conking their hair to make it straight. They only did this because according to society being black was the lowest social status available, so many black people tried to be as white as possible. The black upper class was especially prone to trying to be more white; they looked down on the blacks from the ghetto as if they were better than them. And the press always called them the “Black Muslims” which was taken the wrong way. People said they were Black, and Muslims, but of course the press made this look bad. Other black leaders for civil rights would talk down to Malcolm and his followers because they hated white people, and wanted them to fight for civil rights. Nevertheless, I thought Malcolm had a good answer to this saying, “ why fight for your civil rights before you fight for your human rights.”

When Malcolm became a Muslim he went through a resocializing process from a deviant man to a relatively respectful person. Even though, at that time, I’m sure what he was trying to do was still considered deviant by the white society.

He had many personal troubles also bothering him, such as when his younger brother Reginald was silenced and removed from the Muslim movement. Malcolm was so pressured by his social institution that he turned his back to his brother. He found out later that his mentor Muhammad had violated many rules of the Islamic faith himself, but only were his mistresses silenced and not Muhammad himself. Also, about the time he found out about this, he found out that Muhammad praised Malcolm to his face, but behind his back he tore him apart. Malcolm also realized later that Muhammad wanted Malcolm dead because he was a threat to his Muslim religion.

This is where the next phase of his life started. He remained a Muslim but had very different views than his mentor Muhammad. He felt that he was mislead by Muhammad and decided to start his own social institution called the “Muslim Mosque, Inc.” He wanted to get a better understanding of other cultures involved in Islamic beliefs so he traveled to Mecca, and participated in the Hajj.
