Once again Jesus uses the Old Testament to compare passages to one another. He states that evil comes from the heart shows this in the story of Isaiah. He says, “These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.” (Is 29, 13) The reason that Jesus uses this quote is to show how useless prayer is if one does not feel it in ones heart. Mark uses the Arabic word, “qorban” to describe the situation, which means dedicated to God. While Mark uses the word, Matthew just uses the definition for the Arabic to understand. By doing this it shows the audience that Matthew’s gospel was written later then Mark’s. The reason that one can say this is because he does not say the word because Mark has already used it.

The introduction discusses the whole outlook of the story and what is going to happen. In Mark’s introduction, he tells the reader who he is writing to and why it was written during that time. Mark tells us that he is writing to the Gentiles and that the story was written when people needed something to look at and believe in. They needed it to protect themselves against religious persecution and something to stand up for. They use the story as a guideline, to study and figure out the teachings of Jesus. When telling the story to the Gentiles, Mark realizes that they know nothing about the cultural traditions of the Jews. They don’t know the ritual about how the Jews like to cleanse their hands and how important this tradition is to the Jewish people. Mark knows that they wouldn’t have understood the story without him explaining it to them. In Matthew’s introduction, he claims that he is writing to the Jews and therefore he has no explaining to do because they already know their rituals. The point is that the stories are all about understanding. By reading some of the books in the Old Testament, one might understand the readings better.

In this passage, Jesus’ intention was somewhat similar but yet different than other passages. In this passage his point is to show that what a person eats doesn’t dirty his soul but rather the thoughts and what a person says rather. This made the elders feel that the law they created was just as strong as Mosaic Law but Jesus says that this statement is ridiculous because God is always correct and his laws will always be more powerful than the laws of humans.
