Indian Medicine Men and Women

What are the different ways of healing between Indian medicine men and Indian medicine women?

In each Native American tribe there were different people with different duties. Everyone in an Indian tribe had their responsibilities and their contribution to it. There were fishermen, hunters, land workers and more, that brought the food to the tribe. There were also chiefs that made sure everyone was following the rules of the tribe, but also in each tribe there were special people that played a big role in the preservation of health. These were the Medicine People.

As known, none of all the Native tribes in America were the same. Most of them did not speak the same dialect; they all had their own way to communicate with each other. Also each had their own food, and their costumes. The same with Medicine People. Some tribes like, the Mohawks, and the Ojibawa had mostly medicine men to heal the sick, some tribes like the Yurok of California had only medicine women, and there are others like the Hopi and the Apache of the American Southwest that had many different medicine people.

Medicine People in the early days had the power to help the tribe in their time of need and sickness. By “power” they meant energy of a spiri

But were they able to put spells? And if so how did they make them? Does the gender represent any source of spiritual power? Or is there any preference of sex from the sources where they received their powers?

There were differences in the ways of healing between medicine men and medicine women. Medicine men had the power to dissolve a spell of witchcraft by using a technique called “ Sucking Cure”. This consisted in a medicine man sucking through a straw made of Bamboo or other natural straw. This helped to suck the bad spirits out from the person’s body. “Medicine men used this technique to withdraw the causes of illness in a person”. (Liptak, pg. 40) This healing process was the most common way to heal among the medicine men in native tribes.

In general, medicine men and medicine women used herbs to make beverages and use it as medicines, they used to mix herbs, bake them and then boil them in water, then make the sick person drink it and this was expected to take the illness away. As shown in movies, most of the medicine people use this method to heal and as medicine evolved, modern medicine adopted this and is based on beverages to cure sicknesses.
