Morality Of Public Relations As A Field

The field of Public relations has always been one of the most controversial in the workforce. The Public Relations Society of America defines public relations work as work that helps an organization and its publics adapt mutually to each other. In simpler terms it is the practice of promoting a company and creating an image that sits well in the publics minds. The main moral concern is that in the practice there is a history of lying, cheating, and deception to create images of companies and products that are not completely truthful. This leads people to believe that the profession is only made up of these lies and mistruths.

In my opinion, I feel that there are both honest and dishonest public relations agencies in existence today. While I look at public relations as my future profession, I am worried that I will be put in situations that I will not feel comfortable in. As an honest, trustworthy, and caring person I do not want to be put in the position to lie on a daily basis. It is one thing to promote your company, but it is a completely different situation to create and boost corporate image based on lies in order to please your company’s publics.

The public relations profession will most likely always be under fire for some reason or another. The field of public relations is essential to businesses and corporations in order to ensure their relationships with their publics and consumers. If a company did not have some sort of public relations department it would most likely not be successful. Many businesses do not even realize that they are doing public relations work. They often don’t realize that the memo they are sending out, or the promotion that they are running is primarily to make their company look good. Public relations is all about image, but image does not mean lies. Image does not mean fake. The practice of public relations is probably one of the most debated topics in businesses today. According to the PRSA (www.prsa.org), the public relations profession has grown more than 30% after September 11th. Companies are now more than ever worried about their image and how people view them. Probably the one job that hasn’t taken a hit from the effects of September 11th is that of public relations work. Public relations is now more than ever proving that image is everything, and whether or not the profession is moral or ethical, it is one of the most important parts of a company. The moral issues will most likely remain a main issue, but the profession will continue to thrive as it has in past years.
