Matisse, Back I-IV and Rodin

Comparison of Matisse, Back I-IV and Rodin, The Walking Man

Throughout the centuries, art has gone though many changes as new artists arise. Many of the artists try to separate themselves from other artists by creating something new that no one had created before, and other artists are inspired by past artists. This leads to having a variety of different kinds of artworks with many different kinds of styles. Each artist can create a piece of art of the same subject but have emphasizes on different components. And this gives the artwork an all new meaning and feeling. In this paper, we will compare how two works of art, during the same time frame, can give a different impression but have the same relative subject. The two works of art that are being compared, is Back I-IV by Henri Matisse and The Walking Man by Auguste Rodin.

Auguste Rodin created the sculpture The Walking Man in 1905. The sculpture is made out of bronze. Rodin created this piece of artwork in Paris, France. But you do not have to go Paris to see it. There is an enlarged fabricated version in The Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden in Houston. In The Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden, you can also see Matisse’s figure of Back I-IV. Matisseâ

s if the figure was in motion. The details of the veins and the muscle strains help bring out the realism of the figures.

Rodin’s figure also has lots of rough spots on his figure. Rodin probably didn’t smooth this out because he wanted the viewer to see the process of how the sculpture was made. Rodin could have also done this to show some of the imperfections that people have instead of creating the ideal person like Leonardo. Matisse also has many rough spots on his figure also. Matisse probably did this to help show the wrinkles in the skin cause by movement as his figure struggles to free itself from the wall of stone. This also gives his figures more realism.

Both Matisse’s and Rodin’s figures are larger than life like scale. But both of these artists were really not concerned with proportion. They were more concerned with the details of the human body to make it as natural and real as possible.

Matisse’s sculpture also seems like it could have been from the renaissance period. His artwork has a relax stance which is similar to Donatello’s David. In these sculptures, the figures have their weights shifted to one side as if they were posing. They seem like they are in motion, but not sudden motion. They do not seem like they are action.

Comparing Rodin’s Walking Man with some of his other artworks, Rodin likes to sculpt people in their most natural state. Rodin’s sculptures take on the appearance of people who are doing everyday activities. Rodin’s other sculptures have lots of details that express lots of feelings and emotions.

Rodin wanted to create a very life like sculpture that seems almost real. Rodin helps make it more realistic by carving it very carefully in detail. He shows the muscle strains in the legs as the man is walking and holding position. He also brings out the ripples in
