Dissociate Identity Disorder
Dissociate Identity Disorder Driving for miles in a trance like state of mind, not really remembering driving is called “Highway Hypnosis”. “Highway Hypnosis” happens to almost everyone, this is a normal form of disassociation. Disassociation is a mental process, which produces a lack of connection in a person’s thoughts, memories, feelings, and actions. (Sidran.org) A more severe form of disassociation is Dissociate Identity Disorder or formally called Multiple Personality Disorder. DID is a psychiatric disorder characterized by having at least one “alter” personality. (Skepdic.com) Psychiatrists have argued for years if DID actually exists. The famous case of “Sybil” leads some psychiatrists to be skeptic about the disorder. “Sybil was said to have six-teen personalities. (Newsweek) Cases have been reported of patients having over one-hundred personalities. This paper will present cases of patients diagnosed with DID and information about the disorder to argue that Disassociation Identity Disorder does truly exist. DID is said to be an adaptive reaction to experiences of extreme trauma. When a child is faced with a traumatic experi
Another very interesting case is a forty-year-old man named Cal. Cal thought he had lived a very normal childhood even though he couldn’t really remember much of it, until the age of thirty. Cal began to hear voices inside of his head. The voices were compelling him not to be afraid anymore and that they would protect him. Cal began to think he was going crazy so he saw a psychiatrist that diagnosed him with DID. Over a time period of about a year twenty- four personalities had revealed themselves. Some of the personalities include Clay a young boy, Melina a young girl, and Switch who happened to carry all of the pain from Cal’s childhood. Through talking to Switch Cal’s diagnosis made more sense, he was sexually abused very badly by his mother when he was a child. Cal was so confused by his mothers abuse towards him that he decided to block it out of his mind until it couldn’t be hidden anymore. Cal had no recollection of what happened to him as a child because he had hidden it behind Switch his whole life. Astonishing but true Cal actually lives a normal life; he is married and has a son. His personalities come out often but they are all very kind and are not harmful, his wife even reads the young entities a story every night. (Oprah) One very interesting case of DID was a patient named William Milligan. William was accused of four charges of rape in 1978. During the trial the ten faces of Billy started to reveal themselves. Some of Billy’s personalities included a three-year-old girl named Christine, a little withdrawn boy named David
