Napoleon was born on August 15, 1769. He was born in the city of Ajaccio in Corsica, a small island off North Africa. At a young age Napoleon’s parents, Letizia and Carlo Bonaparte, reserved him a spot at a French military school. When Napoleon was old enough his parents sent him to another military school in Brienne, France. Nobody really liked him at this new school. The other students felt that Napoleon was a foreigner and did not like him very much. As a result of this he devoted all of his time to his studies. After Napoleon graduated with top honors he continued his military schooling by attending the Cole Military Academy in Paris. He spent one year there before he was called up by the French

Napoleon thought if he could take over Egypt that he could cut off the trade routes to the British. He went for the British because they were a central power that he thought he needed to conquer first in order to get Europe under his control. Napoleon brought thirty-five thousand troops with him to Egypt and easily took the country over. Unfortunately for Napoleon, the British already knew of his plans of a surprise attack from the south. His army was surprised by the British as they were regrouping for a sneak attack and his troops were devastated.

After the defeat in Moscow Napoleon’s Empire began to collapse. England, Russia, Prussia, and Austria allied together again to fight France. Napoleon’s army didn’t have many victories in these battles. Eventually England and its allies took over Paris and Napoleon gave up the throne. He was then exiled from France. He traveled to a nearby island named Elba and started a new empire. Ten months later Napoleon, with thousands of soldiers and supporters, retook Paris. Once Napoleon took over Paris he tried to make peace with all of his enemies. His enemies did not accept his peace offering. Napoleon then decided to strike before they could strike him. He first attacked Belgium and was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo. This was the last major battle that Napoleon would fight in. Eventually he surrendered on the British battleship Bellerophon. After this battle he was exiled to the South Atlantic island of Saint Helena where he died in 1821.

The peace in Europe did not last. In 1803 France and England started fighting again. This time France had to fight England, Russia, Austria, and Sweden who had all become allies. During this time Russia did not like Napoleon and began mocking him throughout their country. Unfortunately, Napoleon could not attack Russia while he was defending an attack from England. Napoleon did not care and went after Russia anyway. He took a large amount of soldiers and chased Russian troops around in its country for about a year.
