Nice Boys Can Do Bad Things

According to Carol Pritchard, in her book, Avoiding Rape On and Off Campus, rape happens worldwide. It is up to the individual to try to prevent rape from happening by being aware of personal safety, attending classes, and limiting alcohol consumption. “One out of every four college women is attacked by a rapist before she graduates; one in seven will be raped” (Bender 67). A seventeen-year-old freshman attended a “Little Sister” rush party with two of her roommates and was raped. A fraternity brother offered her a ride home since her roommates left earlier in the night. While waiting to leave, other fraternity brothers wanted her to go into a room so they could discuss “Little Sister” matters. The fraternity brothers told her, in order for her to become a little sister, she must have sex with a fraternity brother. Each of the three brothers who were there had sex with her while she refused (Pritchard 24). This incident constitutes rape.

To avoid rape, personal safety must be considered; such as being assertive, being aware of the surrounding environment, and avoiding dangerous places. Being assertive consists of acting confidant in words and actions, such as saying “no.”

According to Carol Pritchard, “being effective against an attacker you must use all your strength. It is absolutely essential that you use all of your strength and direct your actions to disable the attacker even if you know or like him” (44). In a confrontation everything happens quickly which gives the victim all the more reason to use their instincts to decide how to handle the situation.

“Define your limits. How much touch you want with different male friends (handshake, kiss on cheek, kiss on mouth, hug with both arms, intercourse, no touch” (Pritchard 64). A safe environment is a place where an individual feels comfortable and in charge of certain situations. Many college campuses have what is called “danger spots.” Danger spots on campus include high-risk fraternity houses, open parking lots, and attending college sport celebrations.

To avoid danger spots, s
