Latino Immigrants in Nassau County
Long Island has lots of diversity in its’ cities and towns. The Latino immigrant population is just one of the major groups to grow in Nassau County. With the increasing amounts, Latinos are being discriminated and disadvantaged against. Many of them make a substandard living and are forced to live in poverty because they have little or no education. Latino immigrants are discriminated in the workplace, getting loans, laws and in most aspects of life. There are many ways Latinos in Nassau County are being discriminated against. Most cases where Latinos are involved in discrimination cases are to do with harassment charges, hazards at the work place, and low paying wages. Many Latino working males are trying to either support a family at home here in Nassau County, or supporting them by sending money to their homelands to support their families. Latin Immigrants are not only discriminated against in the workplace, they are discriminated against in where they have to live, or what type of financial aids they can get such as loans, etc. Most Latino immigrants live in the worst parts of Nassau County. They are usually multiple family homes or rundown houses that need major repairing. In early 1990, a study was done about Latin people purchasing or renting homes. The story goes a Latino family wanted to purchase a home, the real estate agent said that the house was no longer available. But when a white family inquired about the same house, it was still available (Youth Board 41). Also, the average income for about half of the Latino population in Nassau County is $35,000 which is not enough to support a family especially on Long Island.
