What is an Icon?
What is an icon? Many people have different views about the meaning of an icon; to me I think icons are just like role models. After reading the essay “Heroine Worship the age of the female icon” by Holly Brubach I thought about many different icons that were important to me. The first icon that came to my mind was my sister but I can not write about her because she is not famous, so then I thought about someone that was like her and had many of the same characteristics. Princess Diana is an icon that has made an impact on many peoples lives young and old. In Brubach’s essay she explains how some female icons are looked up upon to compare their self to but could never strive to be them. She shows how people look up to icons as more of what there looks are and not the good they have done or the kind of heart they have. Throughout this essay I will be disproving the reasons why Brubach thinks of a female icon using the late Princes Diana. “Diana was a celebrity royal. She was a movie star who never actually appeared in a movie”(Internet). Diana’s life was basically a movie with paparazzi all around her at all times. Diana has dominated the world in so many areas with her sparkling eyes that almos
arch you could tell that Diana was so caring for homeless young people and many others that were in distress. “An icon is a human sound bite, an individual reduced to a name, a face and an idea”(Brubach 412). When I think of Princess Diana I do not think of a particular thing that she said but I think about how she was not like a ordinary Princess or Queen. Many women define Diana as a feminist heroine. Diana is a female that was an inspiration to children and adults and accomplishments with her family, she was not known for her appeal to men. “She was very soft and everyone could sort of relate to her and I think that’s what made her so popular with the rest of the world because she came down to our level”(Library). Of course everyone is going to think that just because someone is famous, wealthy and glamorous they have the stereotypical view that, that person is a snob. Diana did a good job proving this to be wrong. The late Princess was not out just for herself or her family but she was here for anyone that needed her. She cared so much about the world and how to make it a better place to live in. I have proved how the late Princess Diana was not an icon that admired only for her looks but the contributations that she has mad to every mankind. In Brubach’s essay she was stating how women are icons for their looks to men. Princess Diana’s concerns were to raise healthy children and helping the world and the many different types of people in it. I have this question now why do the good people die young? Diana is a role model that made herse
