Another time that Odysseus uses his wit and intelligence is during his encounter with the Phaiakians. This is one of the times that Athena intervenes to help Odysseus. As Odysseus slept on the shore, Athena went to Nausikaa. Athena disguised herself as the daughter of Dymas and told Nausikaa to go and wash her clothes the next day. Athena did this so that Nausikaa and Odysseus would meet. During this meeting Nausikaa would tell Odysseus that he needs to talk to Arete first if he wants to get conveyance home. Athena’s intervention was very helpful to Odysseus. He could have had many more troubles if he had no help from Athena. Odysseus probably would have gone straight to Alkinoos. Here again in the land of the Phaiakians, Odysseus kept his identity a secret. This could have once again protected him from harm. The Phaiakians are a people who depend on the sea for life, and Poseidon is both the ruler of the sea and Odysseus’ enemy. Odysseus did eventually reveal his identity, but by then he was safe and he had won favor with the Phaiakians. By befriending the Phaiakians, Odysseus acquired a ship to take him home, and many precious gifts to take with him.

Odysseus uses his wit and intelligence to convey his homecoming in a successful way. His ability to deceive people and keep his true identity secret is the trait that assists him the most. In his encounter with the Cyclopes, Odysseus uses his intelligence to save himself and his comrades.
