From around 2000 BC, Chinese civilisation was led by a progression of dynasties until the collapse of the very last Manchu (Qing) Dynasty in 1912. Up until this period, the social development of Traditional China was perhaps influenced by a number of significant ideas and beliefs. Contributors include the ideology of Confucius, a wise Chinese philosopher; the alleged principles behind the status of women in Chinese society; the first emperor to govern a united China, Shi Huangdi; and the numerous religious beliefs, which the people adopted during the era of Traditional China.

The ideas and teachings of the most respected philosopher in Chinese history, Confucius, have had a major impact on the beliefs, customs and culture in Traditional China. Although the “Great Master Kong” was not recognised vastly during his life, it was his followers who publicised his teachings through a book known as The Analects.

From the beginning of the first dynasty till the falling stages of the last dynasty, Chinese society has been influentially fashioned by the ideas and values of Confucius, of the role that women were anticipated to portray in the social order, the theories and codes implemented by Shi Huangdi, and by the assorted and diverse religious and legendary beliefs. These developments are obvious from the changes that occurred throughout Traditional China and how they had an enduring effect on its society.

Women in Traditional China were not considered imperative. Instead, they were given the status of inferiority. Because of this belief, girls were regarded as being a burden on the family for it caused financial difficulty for the head of the family to marry their daughters off. Therefore, infanticide was usually performed on newly born baby girls, or if they were spared, baby girls were often made to sleep on the floor as a sign of their weakness and inadequacy.
