A Prayer for Owen Meany
A Prayer for Owen Meany is a pretty thick novel with a lot of lessons to be learned in it. I was never taught the real meaning of having faith in something. And through reading this novel I have come a little bit closer to understanding a word that people use in everyday life. Having faith means having a confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, an idea, or thing. In this novel there are instances where faith is explained and exemplified. One instance is when Johnny and Owen were walking under the bridge and the Yankee Flyer passes over them. When this happens Owen gives his philosophy of life. Also when Owen is telling Johnny about his dream and Johnny does not want to believe in his dream. Finally, the best example in the book about faith is when Owen is with Johnny and Owen is asks him about the Mary Magdalene statue. Finally, the part of the novel that demonstrated faith the best is when Johnny and Owen are practicing the shot; they practice until they can't see the Mary Magdalene statue anymore. When this happens Owen usually asks Johnny if the statue is still there and Johnny always replies to the answer with "yes". Then on one particular day Owen asks Johnny about the statue and the questioning went on as it usually does. Then Owen goes a little further with the questioning and would not stop. Johnny becomes a little heated with the subject and is almost yelling at Owen telling him that the statue is still there. Then Owen calmly said, "Well now you know how I fell about god, I can't see him but I absolutely know he is there". This is the ultimate example of how faith is demonstrated in the novel. Owen has a lot of premonitions about his life and death. He tries to tell Johnny about his death and Johnny makes fun of Owen and tells him not to believe everything that pops up into his mind.
