The War on Poverty was to break the cycle of poverty that affected nearly 35

million Americans (Greenbaum). After the Vietnam War, the government had

over spent for the war and was unable to compensate the soldiers. There were

many programs developed to help the Americans who suffered from this war on

poverty and to bring the employment rate back up. Welfare was a program

developed in Chicago to help support the poor families, and funds were given to

help improve Chicago schools. War on Poverty was a success on some counts; a

lot had changed from the beginning. From the recent increases of America

economy and social lives, one can tell that America had changed since the

Vietnam War, riots, and racial issues. President Lyndon B. Johnson’s War on

Poverty influenced many American lives.

Groups were organized in the city’s communities to improve the schools. Parents got more involved in their children education and their environment. In order to make sure their kids didn’t experience the same communities got each and every citizen involved and informed. Chicagoans fought back on the war on poverty by organizing many groups that helped to improve their school systems for the children to have a better education no matter what race.

It was also created to help compensate for funding during the Vietnam War. There no money to distribute to the soldiers for their work in the war. Fathers barely had money to support their families or themselves, because no jobs were available. When soldiers died in the war, women and children were looking for something to make up for their lost. Money was suppose to take care of the brave soldier who fought and risked his life for this country.

The War on Poverty had greatly influenced many in Americans and even across the world. People can see how America have come so far to get out of the financial and social spills in the past. From determining what the War on Poverty was-- a term basically used to give America hope for a better life after the harsh and depression Vietnam War. It left many women and children without their husband or father. It left many families struggling to support themselves and little ones that led them to poverty. Without jobs being available who was going to repair their status that fast? Programs like the Head Start, Welfare, Job Crops, and Medicare gave them hope. Programs like these was the root to War on Poverty. The Vietnam War left families hopeless and tired of trying to rebuild something that was totally destroyed. Having no money from the war because the government spent so much that they couldn’t compensate the soldiers or their widows. But this was also an opportunity for the president, congress, government, and people to focus on the nations problems then on international problems. Government offered work-training and work-study programs for those who lacked the skills and

The Economic Opportunity Act was a big program that laid the ground work of social reform. War on Poverty was a success, which help start many new programs such as Job Crops, College Work Study, Neighborhood Youth Corps and many other programs to aid Americans from age of 16 and up. Not only did they provide jobs for the needy and those who could not afford to pay for college, they provided them with access to learn how to a particular job. The many various programs brought the poverty rates for Americans down. Not only was jobs offered and training, but help was needed in order to rebuild the areas that were destroyed during the terror. This was a bid decrease with the help of National Job Crops, VISTA, Head Start, and others to help rebuild America’s economy.

What specifically did it do for Chicago? Welfare programs was established in Chicago and throughout the cities for poor children and families. With barely enough income coming in, programs such as this one, help to provide to families. Part of the welfare program was food stamps which was expanded by Congress. It gave the poor a chance to buy just about the same as the average and over-average income people in the Chicago land area and throughout the cities.
