Overcoming the obstacles to fulfillment and happiness are very possible according to Plato and Augustine. Plato, whose emphasis is on Romantic love and sexual love, believes that Romantic and Sexual love is the first step toward appreciating and understanding the whole of beauty, “Beauty itself.” As long as one ascends the staircase in the proper order, it is possible for one to overcome the obstacle to achieve happiness and fulfillment. According to Augustine, whose focus is on love of God, he believes that all forms of love are good, but only so long as love of God is assigned to the first priority or the fundamental place of the “house of love.” Augustine believes that in order to achieve happiness, the foundation of the house must be devoted to the love of God, then everything else such as sex, ….. falls into place.
