Oftentimes, the monarch was based on the need for a strong ruler who could gather the countries best men to form and command a military that was used to defend the country. The monarch was absolute and only responsible to God and was considered to be God's representative in all worldly and royal matters. A strong central government was needed to maintain order and provided a stable atmosphere in which trade could flourish. In Macbeth, found in The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, the three witches introduce act one by appearing to Macbeth and Banquo. They tell Macbeth that he will be "Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis, and King hereafter" (1.3.45-50). Macbeth is introduced to ideas of greatness, a concept which has not crossed his mind before, making him query the witches form more information to quench his curiosity for this new idea. Lady Macbeth also plays an important role in the play, as she is the character who eventually persuades Macbeth to kill Duncan, the king. Soon after the witches planted their prophecies of advancement in Macbeth's head, he writes his wife a letter describing the three prophecies and how he feels about them. Macbeth then draws Lady Macbeth into the murder by calling her "My dearest partner of greatness” (1.5.9-10). He then continues with his letter by promising Lady Macbeth a queenship.

Lady Macbeth also gives a speech on how she wishes she were not a woman so she could kill Duncan herself. Lady Macbeth- “Had he not resembled my father as he slept, I had done’t” (2.2.13-14). Before these lines, Lady Macbeth presented a seemingly stable foundation of control of her husband; Lady Macbeth’s deterioration is a result of being overpowered by her own evilness. This is seen when she says “out dammed spot! Out I say!... Who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him (5.13.39-45).

Loss of integrity is also a major theme in corruption. Macbeth is shown as a very noble gentleman and says a lot to gain the trust of the king, Duncan. Macbeth says:
