Politicians Say The Darndest Things

During the year 2000 election, many things were said with an intent to hurt the opponent’s reputation, and corrode his follower’s faith in his leadership. These harmful words were used so that the other candidate could gain an edge in the polls. Unjust acts such as the ones described above would have been considered slanderous fifty years ago. The worst part about this sort of thing happening is, unfortunately, for the most part it is the candidates who are doing the talking while America is listening and allowing it to happen. This name calling is compounded by the fact that more and more candidates are relying on these tactics for the upper hand in any given election. While both parties, Republican and Democrat, are guilty of this, one statement above all was the most untactful and did not set a good example to the American people; the statement referred to George W. Bush Jr.’s competency to run the white house. The statement made by both Al Gore and Joe Liberman that George W. Most kids, and adults have had to sit through government class an hour a day and are kept well informed of this information. If someone was not competent enough to run America then they would not get elected; it is the media’s self imposed job to make sure of that.

George W. Bush also has at his disposal, an experienced cabinet that will advise him in all political affairs, state or foreign. In fact, even though it is not greatly mentioned in the constitution, the cabinet can play a highly influential role in the presidents career, as long as the president takes into account the cabinet’s advice. In the Encyclopedia of Presidents the cabinet is given two definitions; the first is that the cabinet members are the president’s appointed men who oversee specific executive departments, and the second is that they be referred to as a “collective body” only when they meet formally. (Encyclopedia of the Presidency, 149.) Whichever definition one would go by, the cabinet is still an experienced group of people who’s actual job is to help the president with all affairs concerning the nation. Bush nominated a very diverse and qualifi
