In both Mexico and in the United States there were two main opposing political parties. In Mexico there were the Liberals and the Conservatives and in the United States there were the Federalists and the Democratic Republicans. The Liberals in Mexico were Pro-American and believed in a federalist type of government. They were also interested in the individual rights of the people and wanted the elimination of the fueros, which are special rights given to the military and church leaders, such as tax exemptions. The conservatives were interested in keeping the social arrangement the same, except the moving of the Creoles into the top spot, in place of the Peninsulars. The Democratic Republicans of the United States shared some interests of the Liberals of Mexico in that they favored the common man.
