Preparation For College

Thousands of students across the United States of all ages are involved in raising livestock for agricultural projects. The workload received from one of these projects is tremendous, not always fun, but definitely beneficial. In fact, each student spends hours every day with their animals to work towards their supreme goal in life, to attend college and become successful. After all, raising a livestock project such as lambs is a complete preparation for attending college.

One of the most exciting aspects of attending college in the eyes of a teenager is that they are finally on their own. Responsibility must quickly be plastered onto this unskilled individual. At first, this may be a difficult task, but students who raised a livestock project are already accustomed. Every day in the lamb pen, I must make sure my lambs are fed twice a day on schedule, exercised, maintaining a healthy diet, and trained to show correctly. In college, students must complete each assignment on time, attend every class, make certain that they pay for their classes on time, and not party so hard that they can’t wake up the next day for the early eight o’clock class. One must realize


Money management is a skill that must not be overlooked for both college bound and agricultural students. Because money does not grow on trees, I have learned to hold fundraisers and apply for several scholarships that could be used at this time of need. Unbelievably, many high school students do not know how to apply for college scholarships, but because I am involved in this agricultural project, I began to apply in the fifth grade. Once I received the money, I discovered that I could not just go out and splurge my money on a pen full of lambs. I had to conserve my money, knowing that it would also be needed for feed, entry fees, veterinary bills, hotel rooms, and special equipment. In college, although a person might want to take several classes one semester, the fact of buying books, food, gas bills on long trips home, and a place to live also has to be factored in.
